THE ISSUES

Iraq/Afghanistan Veterans PTSD

The number of veterans involved in these conflicts represents a 9.6% increase from the 2012 level, which is an increase of over 53,000 patients. In the VA Subcommittee on Health, a hearing was conducted on the Department’s suicide prevention programs. Data indicated that there were about 950 suicide attempts per month among veterans who were receiving VA care. As we learn more and more of our veterans returning home suffer from PTSD, I will continue to examine what progress the VA has made to identify at-risk veterans, effective intervention and treatment, and their ability to meet the on going challenges associated with suicide prevention.
