Veteran unemployment is currently 7.7% for all generations of veterans, and higher among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. Young veterans between the ages of 20-24, have a 17.8% unemployment rate. To help veterans find employment, I authored the VET JOBS Act, which would allow veterans to easily access a list of the jobs that are most in demand in and around a specified zip code. I have also been a longstanding leader in advocating, and voting for, generous funding for veterans and their earned benefits, particularly in the area of education. Last year I joined in passing the Vow to Hire Heroes Act that, among the major provisions, included a temporary extension of the Montgomery GI Bill benefits for eligible veterans to receive up to one year of training at a community college or technical school for in-demand occupations.
