The VA’s Homeless Veterans Registry contains over 400,000 names of current and formerly homeless Veterans. We must first identify the scope of this issue then we can address homeless veterans more effectively. In the 2013 Budget, $1.352 billion was included to fund programs that will prevent and treat Veteran homelessness. To transition these veterans off the streets and into stable living environments, VA’s Grant and Per Diem Program awards grants to community-based organizations that provide transitional services. The 33% increase over the 2012 level, will support the VA’s goal of reducing the number of homeless Veterans to 35,000 in 2013.
