STATE SENATOR SINKS TO NEW LOW IN FOUNDERING CAMPAIGN WITH DISCREDITED STORY ATTACKING OPPONENT’S WIFE, SHOWS HIS BLATANT GENDER BIAS

JULY 19, 2012 – Candidate Steve Oelrich is mailing a newspaper article that has been discredited by the leadership of the College of Central Florida (CF), the current president, Jim Henningsen, former president Charles Dassance, and James Harvey, CF’s vice president for finance.  Oelrich’s charge is totally refuted, but he continues this attack on Congressman Stearns’ wife and on the integrity of CF.

Jim Henningsen, President of CF, Special to the Ocala Star-Banner/Gainesville Sun, 6/20/2012

“The recent article published by the Ocala Star-Banner and Gainesville Sun regarding funding received from the federal government and Joan Stearns’ employment progression at the college is a misrepresentation of the facts and warrants clarification. Mrs. Stearns’ promotions and raises have been tied to performance and increasing scope of responsibilities. I find it interesting that the article tied federal awards to Mrs. Stearns’ pay raises. Between 2003 and 2006, Mrs. Stearns earned the same percentage increase in salary that all employees at CF were awarded. In the other years, she assumed responsibility for additional departments, including the Foundation for the College of Central Florida, after Dr. Cassius Pealer retired in 2007. She has raised its assets more than $10,500,000, or 16 percent, between 2007 and 2011, without the aid of any funding from the federal government.”

Ocala Star-Banner/Gainesville Sun Article, 6/16/2012

Dassance (former President of CF) said it was “absolutely, unequivocally not the case” that Mrs. Stearns was promoted based on her husband’s support for CF.  “I was never, ever, ever asked by Congressman Stearns to do anything favorable for his wife,” Dassance said.

James Harvey, CF’s vice president for finance, noted that Joan Stearns has a “very strong record” in managing the foundation’s assets since taking over for Pealer, especially in a down economy. According to Harvey, based on assets, CF has the third-largest community college foundation in Florida and ranks in the Top 10 nationally.

Oelrich indicates in his statements a clear bias on woman achieving and accomplishing tasks without the intercession of their husbands and/or support of outside intrusion in today’s work environment.  But clearly in today’s modern age woman can get promotions and increase their salaries on their own.   We see this everywhere.  However, it is unfortunate that Oelrich believes that this cannot happen except through manipulation of the work place by men. Shame on him for this gender bias and for his negative, distorted view on the achievements of women.
