Stearns’ Amendment Prevents New TRICARE Fees

HOUSE APPROVES STEARNS’ AMENDMENT PREVENTING NEW TRICARE FEES FOR 9.3 MILLION VETERANS AND THEIR FAMILIES

ADMINISTRATION PROPOSES NEW FEES – STEARNS STOPS OBAMA

Stearns: “I understand budget cuts need to be made and we need to get our fiscal House in order, but my colleagues, we owe our veterans quality health care for their service and sacrifice.”

JULY 20, 2012 — President Obama has proposed additional fees and cost sharing increases, a new annual enrollment fee for TRICARE for Life, aggressive increases in pharmacy copayments, and a catastrophic cap of $3,000 per family.  This is on top of the first increase in enrollment fees advocated by the Obama Administration last year, the first increase since 1995.

The House adopted an amendment by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL) to ensure the Administration does not implement a first-time-ever enrollment fee for TRICARE for Life Beneficiaries.  Said Stearns, “It is unconscionable that this Administration seeks to raise health care costs on more than 9.3 million veterans and their families that are currently eligible for TRICARE when there are other excesses that can be cut.  For example, we should limit funds to Pakistan before giving the Department of Defense (DOD) the option to raise costs on our veterans.”

The amendment was adopted during consideration of H.R. 5856, the Department of Defense Appropriations Act, which was also approved.

The Amendment Endorsed by:  American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Military Officers Association of America.
